The trademark "Rien de Spécial" was registered in 1987, in order to protect the name and our artistic activities.
"Rien de Spécial" is a reference to Zen (Zen being, in the words of a Zen master, "nothing special" — a return to the normal condition of the mind…). The name was chosen by Stéphan Barron for the association that would, from 1984 onwards, produce all of his works and publications.
The term "Rien de Spécial" was not inspired by a witticism of Andy Warhol and has nothing to do with his approach — in fact, one could say it stands at the opposite end of the spectrum. Canal+ attempted to use the term illegally in 1990, but was forced to change the title of its programme.
